Should I get one huge computer monitor or two smaller ones and split my display across the two screens? - small computer monitor

I've heard that you can use to distribute your video card to display on two monitors. 20and 22-inch screens are obviously less expensive and would be cheaper than buying a big 27 or 30-inch Dell LCD computer monitor.
Is it easy to split screen and functions effectively. What do you think
